News — 30 years and counting…
The Health Shop at the Galleries has celebrated its 30th year at the shopping centre this month.
The shop, which owner Pearl Watson runs with her daughter Tracy, offers customers advice on natural and holistic remedies for a wide-range of ailments, first opened its doors in the Centre on 9th June 1989.
Pearl’s original store was situated where shoppers now sit and enjoy coffee and cake at Costa and Muffin Break in the redeveloped Wessington Square. The new Square, which features a food court and a double-height, glazed roof, was created following a major refurbishment programme and completed in 2011. Pearl’s original shop could be found alongside a deli, Donut Magic and Carlton Connection Jewellery.
While the store has moved location, and the Centre changed over the years, Pearl’s passion for natural remedies remains – as do many loyal customers.
Pearl Watson, owner of the Health Shop, said: “I’ve always had an interest in herbal medicines and my Dad used herbs and flowers to create his own tonics. It was something that stayed with me and I have been lucky enough to travel to many countries to train alongside my daughter. I truly believe that natural remedies have helped me survive serious illness, including beating cancer and retaining my sight following a detached retina.
“Natural remedies are now more widely accepted and even those who are fit and healthy can benefit from taking a good multi-vitamin or a daily dose of oils to help lubricate the joints or give key functions like the brain a boost. The latest trend is for CBD which is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil and can help ailments such as chronic pain and anxiety.”
Pearl’s shop is an Aladdin’s cave of boxes and bottles offering natural answers to a huge range of ailments from headaches and skin conditions to muscle strains and joint pain.
She is on hand to offer advice to people looking for natural remedies rather than pharmaceutical-based solutions.
