The winners of a competition to design a logo for the Friends of Princess Anne Park have been chosen by the committee team after reviewing all the entries received.
The competition was aimed at children under 16 years old and had two age categories: up to 11 years old and 12-16 years old.
The two age category winners are Abbey Payne, aged 13 from Sunderland and Amy Henderson, aged 11 from Washington who have both won a £50 Galleries gift card. Abbey’s logo was the overall winner and will be recreated by a designer and used by the Friends to promote their work and events which are helping to regenerate the Washington landmark.
The Friends are working with local people, groups and businesses to breathe life into the public space with litter picks, planting and events which now includes a weekly Great Run local 2k and 5k run.
Jan Weatherly, chair of the Friends of Princess Anne Park, said: “We had some amazing entries and are grateful for the efforts all of the children put in to their designs. We are delighted with the two winners and look forward to seeing Abbey’s design brought to life and used by the group.
“We want to encourage more people to use and enjoy the park and by working with local residents, city council and businesses want to see it flourish.”
The Galleries Shopping Centre is supporting the Friends this year with staff and retailers helping out with litter picks as well as donating 6 flowering cherry trees as part of the Shopping Centre’s commitment to the environment during Earth Hour.
Helen Boxall, operations manager at the Galleries added: “Congratulations to Abbey and Amy and we hope they enjoy spending their prizes. The Park is a fantastic local resource and we are proud to help the group breathe new life into this fantastic green space that is on our doorstep.”
Princess Anne opened the Park in July 1974 as well as the Shopping Centre. The land was previously farm land and provides a place to play, walk as well as offering running routes, places to picnic with woodland and water to explore.
