Award-winning Energy Management

The Galleries Shopping Centre has won a prestigious SCEPTRE Award for Energy Management at this year’s ceremony held at Grosvenor House, London.

The SCEPTRE Awards, managed by Retail Destination publisher JLD Media, recognise the best practice and best people in the shopping centre industry and put the spotlight on management teams, retailers and suppliers that demonstrate real excellence.

The award follows a series of investment initiatives aimed at delivering energy from renewable sources as well as continuous improvement in technology to reduce usage.

The Centre has installed 1,317 solar photovoltaic panels covering 41,000 sqft on unused areas of the roof. The panels have provided a renewable, clean energy source to support common parts of the centre, reduced carbon emissions and costs.

The project established the Galleries as a leader in energy reduction initiatives and this has been built upon with a continuous programme of upgrading to LED on light fitting component failure throughout the centre. The largest example of this saw all high-level mast lighting in car parks being renewed last year.

David McNee, centre manager of the Galleries, said:  “We are committed to reducing waste, recycling and generating more power from renewable sources and the solar panels and lighting upgrades are a great example of that. Since the turn of the year, we have reduced our overall demand from the grid by 14% and national recognition at the Sceptre Awards is fantastic achievement.”

The Sceptre Award follows on from the Gold Award the Centre gained at the end of last year in the Green Apples Environmental Awards, which aims to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.
