WASHINGTON F PIT
A magnificent Victorian steam engine, engine house and headgear are preserved as a monument to Washington's coalmining heritage that reaches back over 250 years. Washington 'F' Pit is open seasonally and admission is free.

WASHINGTON OLD HALL
Washington Old Hall is a charming 17th Century manor house, which still has some remnants of the original 12th Century dwelling that was home to the direct ancestors of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Restored to its original Jacobean condition, the Hall houses a treasure trove of George Washington memorabilia whilst the beautiful gardens are well worth a visit.

WASHINGTON WETLAND CENTRE

STADIUM OF LIGHT
Football is something of a religion in the North East and the 49,000 seat Stadium of Light could almost be considered its cathedral. The home of Sunderland AFC, it is widely regarded as one of the best football stadia in Europe. Positioned high on the banks of the River Wear the stadium is also one of the city's major landmarks. Conducted tours are available all year round and as well as Premier League home games, the stadium hosts concerts by some of the world’s leading bands.

PENSHAW MONUMENT
One of the North East's most prominent landmarks, Penshaw Monument was built in 1844 in honour of the first Earl of Durham, John George Lambton. Modelled on the Thesion, the Temple of Theseus in Athens, Penshaw stands magnificently above the city on a limestone hill with spectacular views as far afield as Durham Cathedral and the North Pennines.
ROKER AND SEABURN BEACHES
Closest to the city, Roker is an ideal place for water sports with its own the Marine Activities Centre with Seaburn further north offering the wide stretch of golden sand. These award winning beaches and their nearby parks also play host to a number of Sunderland's annual outdoor events, including the annual international airshow.

SUNDERLAND EMPIRE
The Sunderland Empire is the North East's largest theatre and is the only theatre between Leeds and Edinburgh large enough to host major West End shows. Opened in 1907, the theatre boasts splendid examples of Edwardian architecture.
