News — George helps his home town kick off its 60th birthday celebrations

TV Architect George Clarke returned to his roots this week to help his home town kick off its 60th birthday celebrations.

George, whose TV shows include George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, was in at the Galleries Shopping Centre to launch a special design competition for schoolchildren in the town where he grew up.

The competition helps kicks off a year of celebrations being planned to help Washington New Town mark its big birthday next July.

In recognition and celebration of this landmark date, George Clarke, his charity MOBIE and Sunderland City Council are inviting young people from schools across Washington to come up with their own vision of an innovative residential community for the next 60 years.

Ian McGregor, manager of the Galleries Washington Shopping Centre, said: “The Galleries was designed to be at the heart of the community, and it has done just that for the past 50 years. We are delighted to support Washington’s 60th and the Centre’s 50th next year and look forward to another vibrant 50 years for the centre and continued success for the town.
